Interpersonal conflict is a common issue that may arise in university students’ academic activities, friendships, and organizational involvement. Differences in perceptions, interests, and communication patterns can trigger misunderstandings and relationship tensions. This study aims to analyze assertive communication as a strategy for preventing interpersonal conflict among university students. It employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data were collected by examining relevant literature on assertive communication, interpersonal conflict, and communication skills development, followed by content analysis and thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that assertive communication has the potential to prevent conflict by enabling students to express their thoughts and feelings clearly, clarify misunderstandings, practice active listening, and respect differences without disregarding their own or others’ interests. These skills can be developed through assertiveness training, simulations, role-playing, counseling, and the promotion of open dialogue in higher education settings. However, the effectiveness of assertive communication is also influenced by emotional conditions, relationship characteristics, and the willingness of the parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue. Therefore, assertive communication can serve as a preventive strategy to foster healthier and more constructive interpersonal relationships among university students.
